The main purpose of Y Traethodydd is to offer critiques on a range of subjects dealing with ‘culture’, and to understand that word in a wide context to include the conceptual and intellectual fabric of society. The periodical has always succeeded in being timely and contemporary in a real sense in its discussions on literature, religion and the arts.
The substantial and respected reviews contribute to discussing various subjects intelligently and Y Traethodydd has always given a prominent place to book reviews, and always in a form that appeals to the ‘general reader’. For over a century, the periodical has contributed extensively to Welsh-speaking intellectual life.
One of the traits of Y Traethodydd is the variety of its content. In addition to many reviews, each issue includes three or four articles on various subjects. In recent issues, many of the classics of Welsh medium literature have been reconsidered anew and or history has also come under scrutiny. Scientific matters are discussed, especially the relationship between religion and science as well as moral matters and contemporary theology. There is opportunity for ‘dialogue’ amongst the journal’s pages and responses to articles are welcome.
Y Traethodydd is published with the financial support of the Welsh Books Council.
As of July 2019 onwards, Gwasg Gomer, Llandysul, will be printing and distributing Y Traethodydd, and it may be ordered online through Y Traethodydd’s new website or the Presbyterian Church of Wales’ online shop.
