The Presbyterian Church of Wales (PCW) has appointed its first ever Chaplain for Older People.
Sam Hodgins, who lives in Llandudno with her husband Tim, is passionate about her new role.
Sam said: “Over the years we have tended to focus mainly on the needs of children, young people and families, but too often we have taken older people for granted. These are the people who have led and supported our churches so faithfully for decades. This role is about recognising their particular needs, and providing resources, training, and support to retirees and their carers.”
Sam highlighted some of the challenges faced by older people: “Dementia is a major issue. It is estimated that by 2030 one million people in the UK will be living with dementia. When we consider that spouses and families are often the main carers, the figure is even higher. This means loneliness is a huge problem. People often feel isolated and disconnected from the communities they have been part of for many years. In addition, many can no longer attend church due to infirmity, or because they are caring for a partner who is too unwell to leave the house. On top of all this, many older people feel excluded from the digital world that dominates modern life. A significant number of those over 75 do not have a smartphone or laptop, and so cannot access their bank accounts online, while many local bank branches and post offices have closed or moved further away.”
Sam’s new role and ministry will be launched at a conference in Cardiff on October 11. Called Grace for Every Season, the event will highlight the challenges faced by people as they age and the needs of those who care for them.
The keynote speakers are:
Tina English, founder and director of the Christian charity Embracing Age, and author of A Great Place to Grow Old: Reimagining Ministry amongst Older People.
Reverend John Treharne, a Baptist Minister now serving in Llwyn Hendy, with extensive experience of working with older generations.
Rev Nan Powell Davies, General Secretary of the Presbyterian Church of Wales, said: “We are delighted with Sam’s appointment. Through her work with us over several years, she has shown compassion, knowledge, and the pastoral care so needed by older people. This new role will enable us to better understand the challenges they face, and to develop sustainable pastoral support across our churches.”
