A vibrant new mural celebrating pioneering Welsh composer Morfydd Owen has been unveiled in Pontypridd’s Cultural Quarter, creating a lasting tribute to one of Wales’ most influential musical figures.

Located on Crossbrooke Street, the large-scale artwork has been created by renowned Welsh street artist Tee2Sugars and honours the Treforest-born composer, whose remarkable legacy continues to inspire more than a century after her death.

Although Owen died aged just 26, she composed more than 150 works during her lifetime and is widely regarded as one of Wales’ most gifted composers.

The mural has been funded by the Arts Council of Wales following a successful application by the Presbyterian Church of Wales and proceeds from a three night run of performances by Grammy winner Amy Wadge as part of the 2025 festival programme. The large scale piece has transformed the prominent wall of ‘Rhi’s Cafe’ into a celebration of Welsh creativity and heritage.

The unveiling also marks the launch of the 2026 Gŵyl Morfydd Festival programme, which will bring audiences together for a series of performances and events celebrating Owen’s music and influence. The festival is also delighted to announce award-winning songwriter Amy Wadge as its new patron.

  

 “This mural ensures Morfydd Owen’s story is visible in the community where it began. We hope it sparks curiosity, encourages people to discover her extraordinary music and reminds young people that world-class talent can come from our towns and communities.”

Dr Rhian Davies, the composer’s biographer, said: “When I began research in 1982, I was privileged to interview the last people in Pontypridd and Treforest who remembered Morfydd Owen.The mural is based on a photo which was given to me at that time and it’s been really moving to read all the positive comments on social media as today’s residents rediscover Morfydd as one of their own.”

The mural is expected to become a new landmark within Pontypridd’s Cultural Quarter, celebrating both the town’s artistic heritage and its continuing commitment to culture and creativity.

Gŵyl Morfydd Festival is an annual celebration of the life, music and legacy of Treforest-born composer Morfydd Owen. Through concerts, exhibitions, educational activities and community events, the festival shines a spotlight on one of Wales’ most significant composers while inspiring new audiences to engage with Welsh music and culture.
