The Women’s Department is a particularly active branch of the Presbyterian Church of Wales.
Many of our female members work tirelessly in their churches, pastorate and presbytery.
The Women’s Department is split into four Associations: Welsh speakers in north and south Wales and English speakers in the north and south.
Retreats and Committees
During the year, members and representatives of the four Associations meet in committee meetings and for fellowship and teaching in Retreats. Many women also meet at local level in Presbytery committees.
Every year in May each Association holds a Mission Rally.
The rallies are very special occasions as they are an opportunity for the women to come together to worship the Lord. The rallies are also occasions to commemorate and give thanks for missionaries who shared the Gospel in such far-flung places as Mizoram and the Khassi Hills. We have guest speakers and pay special attention to the Church’s current mission workers.
One important aspect of our work is to raise funds towards the Women’s Special Collection, which allows the Department to make generous contributions to the Church’s Life and Witness Workers and Projects, both at home and abroad.
Supporting Mission Abroad
As well as supporting the Church’s workers in Wales, the Women’s Department also supports many projects abroad, including HIV/AIDS projects in African countries such as Malawi and Zambia.
The Department is able to offer grants to our young people to undertake short term mission trips. In 2014, Zoe, Siwan, Becca and Lee visited Uganda, and in 2013 Catrin and Gwawr visited Aizawl, Mizoram. It is inspirational to see God at work in the lives of these young people through such visits, and our understanding is certainly enriched as they share their experiences with us.
This year a group of our members were invited to visit Shillong, by the Women’s Department there. During the visit they were able to see how the Women’s Department supports it’s members to witness and serve their communities.
The Women’s Department is also very proud of its links with Carys Humphreys, the PCW’s only foreign worker, who has worked with the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan for over 25 years.
Our Women’s work is complemented by the Dorcas Programme, which was initiated by the Women’s Department to help the women of our churches share their faith in the Lord Jesus.
The Programme produces resources specificially for the use of women’s groups of all ages. These include Bible Studies and ideas for reaching women outside of the church fellowship.
Sarah Morris is the Programme co-ordinator, and she is available to visit to offer support, ideas, or to speak. You can contact her by email on firstname.lastname@example.org or on 02920620424
